My Students

I am going into my second year of teaching Science to 11th and 12th graders at FHS in Boston, MA. My students are diverse, hard-working, and creative. They bring to our classroom a wonderful mixture of cultures, languages, and ways of thinking; because of this, we all get the opportunity to learn alongside people who are different and similar to us. My students are activists, critical thinkers, caring friends, athletes, and SCIENTISTS! They support each other, and they also challenge each other to do better. I am inspired every day by their (mostly!) positive attitudes and senses of humor, especially when facing typical teenage dilemmas or their personal hardships. At FHS, we encourage our students to work hard, to be themselves, and to always do the right thing. As unique and determined as my students are, they deserve classroom resources that allow me to provide authentic, rigorous, and engaging science learning experiences for them.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will allow me to plan engaging activities for my students and will support them in their science fair presentations. For example, we use anchor charts to model/explain scientific concepts, brainstorm ideas during group discussions, and display ideas for sharing with the class. The laminator will allow me to preserve and display important student work, and it will allow me to create posters that foster an inclusive classroom environment where students are able to build their science identities (such as Women in STEM posters!) My seniors will use the bright colored paper to create trifold presentation boards to share their findings from their individual science fair experiments that they spend the beginning months of school preparing for.

Young people are the future of science.

My goal is to create experiences in the classroom that allow our students to truly see themselves as scientists (both in high school and into their futures). The examples above demonstrate how these donations will allow me to design and lead learning experiences that draw my students IN to science to further develop their identities as scientists and change-makers.
