Imagine a freshmen in college. New home, anew city, maybe even state. Away from all he or she has ever known. How overwhelmed they may feel. Yet, they have a part of their high school education with them, it is their Lab Notebook. I teach high school science. I have taught several subjects in my 11 years here, grades 9-12th; Physical science, biology, environmental science, Anatomy & physiology, and AP Biology. I have had students as young as 13 and as old as 21. They all still the same thing, a good a science education. Whether they go to college or not, all students need a good basic science education. My goal is to enable all students the necessary tools to go to college or a trade school, or life career they choose, with the knowledge they can accomplish anything they desire with an education.Composed notebooks gives them control of their education, and the readied ability of recall at their fingertips.
In years past, I have tried to supply the composition notebooks for the students. It is very difficult, and takes away from lab supplies I need to purchase for my class. It helps the students to be more disciplined in their learning, and responsible for their education.
Composition notebooks give the students a sense of ownership in their learning. They are able to be creative and learn to record what is going on in their world and life. The composition notebook is useful for all students, no matter what level they are in grade or ability.
Imagine walking into an office of a lawyer, or doctor and there snuggled on his or her shelf of professional books is a composition notebook. Tattered and worn, but well used, with one of the most important years of their life written on the pages. Their most challenging class, most memorable class, best class, forever imprinted on those pages, and it was all because you cared enough to give.
