Science Fiction Literature: Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five

Help me give my students the opportunity to read Kurt Vonnegut's classic Slaughterhouse Five in my Science Fiction Literature course.

My Project

In this Science Fiction Literature course, approximately 150 students per year read and analyze rich and complex narratives. Students need to read novels to further develop their reading stamina and fluency as they prepare for the rigors of a college course load.

Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel Slaughterhouse Five is a perfect text for this reason because it is sophisticated and challenging while also being funny and engaging.

Through the study of science fiction from the turn of the last century until the present, students critically analyze literature, essays, film, and television. They demonstrate their mastery of the content through composition essays (e.g., literary analysis, expository, and argumentative), creative short stories, and presentations.

Common topics of study are the challenges caused by the rapid introduction of new technology into society; the role of monsters, aliens, and cyborgs as the societal Other; and the comparison of changing societal values throughout the 20th century SF until the present. We commonly read Ted Chiang, Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin, N.K. Jemisin, Ray Bradbury, James Tiptree, Jr., and others in this course.
