My Students

Most seniors will move on from the halls of our inner city campus to attend a two or four year college. These students are likely to be an immigrant or the child of an immigrant, and the first person in their family to attend college. Though they have worked hard and strove to achieve, most of them will have not read enough to prepare them for the rigors they will face in the coming year.

I want my students to love reading!

I want them to make the connections between ideas and themes of literature to the world they are confronted with. My ambition is to improve students' fluency and stamina in reading by providing numerous high-interest, complex, and challenging texts. Through close reading, analysis, comparison, and synthesis, my students will have some familiarity with the rigors they are soon to face in their college classes.

I have a wonderful textbook for this class, but I want to build a library that students can use as a resource to explore more novels than we can get to in class. Help me expand their Science Fiction universe!

My Project

Students need long and complex texts to improve their reading literacy and fluency. Apart from the stories in our great anthology, students are assigned an Independent Reading Project in which they select any science fiction novel that interests them. Students complete a number of assessments throughout the assignment to help focus and engage their reading: they compose weekly journal entries, prepare and present a "book talk" for their peers, and they compose a formal analysis of one of the themes present in their novel.

Students in the Science Fiction Literature course need a library of mind expanding and engaging books from a variety of authors to help accomplish their reading goals.

Science Fiction has expanded tremendously over the last couple of decades; voices previously absent are starting to make a serious impact in the world of speculative fiction. Young people need to hear these voices. This library is a good start.
