My Project

"I don't want to teach your what to think... I want you to understand why you should think." I found myself awestruck at how those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it. However, history is only so interesting in today's world.

This is my third year teaching science fiction and dystopian literature and every year I am amazed at how many students thrive in this genre finding a world that is enough like their own to get into and excitingly different.

How many kids really dismiss an idea, until I remind them of what was considered "science fiction" just a few years ago.

This generation has more access to technology and a changing world than ever before and each year, I am finding more and more willing to step outside of their comfort zone of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" (no offense to Jeff Kinley) and into books that aren't that far off from the stuff they are seeing adn experiencing every day!

This will ensure that the 125 kids I have passing through my walls, will not have to stop at the first book when the story is over in our literature circles. They can follow through the adventure without having to wait on the library book to be there. (Sometimes, those books can go missing for months.) It's important to strike while the iron is hot and having access to the "what now" book is crucial to develop critical thinking and reading skills.

Please consider supporting youth who are doing the thinking for the next generation. They need all the awareness of what they will face in the world as they can get!

Ms. Schmidt will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by August 1.
