Science Fiction Books Are Worth Snuggling Up To At Home
My students need their own copy of A Wrinkle in Time so they can take it home and read at their own pace. They need THIS book for its science content!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wise to reality, quick to make inferences and able to identify verbal irony, symbols, similes and metaphors, but often without pencils, paper, binders, or notebooks. We live in an urban setting, we encompass myriad cultures and languages, and the vast majority of our students are immigrants with English as a second language. I absolutely love the diversity, ethnicities, and languages that make our school so multicultural. We provide free lunch and breakfast to all our students, many of whom qualify.
Our students deserve to have more than our city can provide them, and that is why I am here.
As a reading teacher, I am looking for books they can 'own' while they are reading them, not just borrow in-class, but many of the books we have we need to share between teachers and classes, and most are not on the Common-Core recommended curriculum.
My Project
Currently our seventh- and eighth-grade students struggle with science vocabulary and comprehension. Our Reading department has books, but few emphasize science, yet our students enjoy science fiction and fantasy stories like the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and especially Star Wars. Most of our books are too limited in quantity for students to take home and really engage at their own pace.
We are asking for enough copies of Madeleine L'Engle's award-winning A Wrinkle in Time so that each of our Reading students can take a copy home to review, reread, or continue reading, according to their individual reading level.
Students are eager to have their own copies of books, and often ask to borrow from our collections. Unfortunately we are unable to meet every student's request at this time, and we especially run out of their first choices, which are usually science fiction or fantasy. Additionally, we wish to support the science curriculum by adding a science-based reading book to students' repertoire of reading successes.
