Science Fiction Anthology

Help me give my students a foundation text for my Science Fiction Literature course. This wonderful anthology covers both the breadth and depth of the genre.

My Students

Most seniors will move on from the halls of our inner city campus to attend a two or four year college. These students are likely to be an immigrant or the child of an immigrant, and the first person in their family to attend college. Though they have worked hard and strove to achieve, most of them will have not read enough to prepare them for the rigors they will face in the coming year.

I want the students to love reading!

I want them to make the connections between ideas and themes of literature to the world they are confronted with. My ambition is to improve students' fluency and stamina in reading by providing numerous high-interest, complex, and challenging texts. Through close reading, analysis, comparison, and synthesis, my students will have some familiarity with the rigors they are soon to face in their college classes.

I have 40 copies of this text already, but I now have 36 more students! I need another class set of texts to achieve my ambitions. Thank you.

My Project

Since the turn of the last century, the genre of science fiction has evolved ahead of the times! In this semester long class, we will survey the various eras of science fiction: Science Romance, Pulp, The Golden Age, New Wave, and Cyberpunk. We will also explore common themes: technology out of control, what it means to be human, fear of the “other,” and visions of the future. We will use short stories, novels, and films for our study. Some possible texts are: Frankenstein, Blade Runner, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Fifth Gate, The Left Hand of Darkness, The Big Book of Science Fiction, Gattaca, and many others.
