Our student population grows more diverse by the day. Income levels, ethnicity, family structures, first languages, interests, and abilities now vary so much that a traditional teaching approach, with a uniform lesson targeted to the average-level student, just doesn't cut it.
We are a Title I school, all of our student receive free breakfast and lunch daily do to family income levels.
Most of our students do not have the opportunity to use technology at home. I am hoping to offer my students opportunities to learn hands-on integrating technology into several learning lessons.
My students need an iPad to assist them with this "Science Environmental" project. I want my students to be able to learn about science through hands-on experiences. The students will use this at home to create this project. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I will use sustainable energy themed units with our science school programs. I teach a wonderful group of student!
My students are creative and eager to learn.
Unfortunately, our school is located in a low income area with 100 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of the students come from single parent families or families with only one parent working.
Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. I plan to have my students read about innovations in alternative energy sources, they will work in groups to design and build a model of a system to generate energy. Each group will then present their design to the class. Next, the students will create an alternative energy design at home with their family and keep data on energy used at home and ways to conserve energy. The instructional activity finishes with everyone discussing the importance of renewable energy resources and what they did at home with their family to conserve energy. In order to carry out this unit, my students need an iPad to research various energy sources and how they might design a system to sustain energy.
This project will make a difference in our students' lives because while learning about alternative energy sources and I know that this will carry over to their everyday lives. In addition, they will learn that science and math are all around us and that families support education.
