This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are typical kids. They love to laugh, dance, draw, and play. My school is a Title I school, which means all of the students who come to my classroom everyday, come from low income households.
Many of them are not physically, mentally, or emotionally prepared for learning every morning.
Many do not have working electricity or running water. Most do not have an adult at home checking their school bag every night and helping with homework.
I have the uphill challenge of not only teaching them academic subjects, but teaching them that they are safe and loved every day they are in my classroom.
My students need to be engaged, motivated, and supported to grow as independent and life long learners. I work tirelessly to meet the needs of my students academic, social, and emotional needs.
My Project
My project will provide needed supplies and opportunities for the children in our school and show them that science and math is everywhere around them. My students need a laptop computer to assist them with this "Science Environmental" project. I want my students to be able to learn about science through hands-on experiences. The students will use this at home to create this project. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I will use sustainable energy themed units with our science school programs. I teach a wonderful group of student!
Unfortunately, our school is located in a low income area with 100 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Many of the students come from single parent families or families with only one parent working.
Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. I plan to have my students read about innovations in alternative energy sources, they will work in groups to design and build a model of a system to generate energy. Each group will then present their design to the class. Next, the students will create an alternative energy design at home with their family and keep data on energy used at home and ways to conserve energy. The instructional activity finishes with everyone discussing the importance of renewable energy resources and what they did at home with their family to conserve energy. In order to carry out this unit my students need a computer to research various energy sources and how they might design a system to sustain energy.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
