Snakes and snails and puppy dog tails truly do interest boys (and girls, too). I want to provide a lot of resources that interest my students and expand their knowledge base.
I teach in a high poverty area of middle Georgia.
My students are full of excitement about learning and knowing about our world. Some of them have limited experiences due to income. Many live in apartments and do not spend a lot of time playing outside and exploring. They are ready to learn about the vast world. I want to provide books on many nonfiction subjects to keep their interest level high.
My Project
I have requested a lot of nonfiction books with titles about snakes, growing things, life cycles, motion, tools and many more science subjects. I plan to have these available in the classroom for easy use daily and I plan to send books home to be read with family. We go to the library once a week and the children are allowed to pick one book. I want to allow them to explore different science and nonfiction books daily. I have been amazed at the excitement about reading when they are reading about subjects that are new and exciting. I want to spark an interest in science now, while they are young. I also am requesting a life cycle model set so they can explore chicks, frogs, butterflies and how they grow.
Having a large collection of nonfiction books will spark a interest in learning about our world - what is in it and how it works.
It will also help build better readers because they will want to know what the words say. I think it is critical that students learn to think about our world at an early age.
