I am in the science specialist at my elementary school. This means that I teach science to all of the kindergarteners-fifth graders. Since this is a new position at my school, I have very few materials to work with. Since I was previously a fourth grade teacher, I want to continue to use a computer program that my fourth graders really enjoyed in my fourth grade class. The computer program is called Science Court. Science Court combines hands-on manipulatives and a multimedia CD-ROM in one complete package. Each title in the series introduces and reinforces the scientific method and fundamental science concepts to children. Science Court includes a video clip on the CD-ROM which presents a funny, animated case built around a scientific question. The case ends up in Science Court, where lawyers and expert witnesses seek the answer to the question. Before the answer is revealed, the video stops and students are invited to guess the answer and choose a hypothesis based on what they have thus far observed. Students then go to the Science Court Lab and use hands-on manipulatives, which are included, to test their hypotheses. Returning to the CD-ROM, students see the explanation in the video clip and then predict the verdict in the Science Court trial. A follow-up hands-on exploration is included where students can further practice the process of observing, making a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis, and then revising the hypothesis. And they have great fun along the way! The reason why I love Science Court so much is because it is hands-on and it promotes groupwork and cooperation. A science unit for third grade is space. For this reason, I am asking for the Science Court CD-rom entitled "Seasons". This CD-rom discusses the Earth's elliptical orbit around the Sun, how Earth is titled on its axis, and the cause of seasons on Earth. Thank you for your support!
