My Project

Reading is fundamental. All educators know this. However, getting students to understand this and engage in the reading process has been increasingly difficult. Technology can be wonderful but it has made reading difficult for students because of the distractions associated with technology. Whether we like it or not, standardized testing is part of the educational process in this country.

Vocabulary is key to success when learning science.

In our state, students are required to take a biology end-of-course exam. The amount of curriculum we have to teach is daunting. Many of our students come to us with vocabulary deficiencies. The purpose of this project is to add hard copy books to our biology curriculum to help increase student biology fluency. End of course test scores matter on our school’s report card. Our department has been working to improve student scores on this test. Vocabulary and reading comprehension are important if students are going to be successful on this test and other standardized tests they take during their academic careers.

Science Comics are an excellent way to get students interested in reading. These books are well-written. They are content-dense but presented in a comic book format that makes reading less intimidating for those students who struggle. There is a virtually unlimited number of ways these books can be used in our classrooms. We can read the books as a whole class. Students can read excerpts and focus on defining new vocabulary words. Students can read and create graphic organizers of the facts they learn. The list of ideas goes on and will be determined by the abilities of the students in our classes.
