This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our kindergarten team has borrowed equipment the last two years to study the growth and life cycle of chickens. This year, we would love to be able to own our own equipment to ensure that every child in kindergarten will have the opportunity to see science come to life. Each spring, we receive 12 - 20 fertilized eggs and learn about the life cycle of chickens while we eagerly await their hatch!

Our students chart and track the growth cycle of each chicken egg, and they are able to identify the anatomy of the chicken throughout the growth cycle.

The candling equipment enables students to see inside the eggs throughout the 21 day grow period.

Finally, once our chicks hatch we keep them in the classroom in a brooder to continue to watch them grow and develop for approximately four more weeks!

This science unit is a favorite of our kindergarteners and our former students! They love seeing science come to life in our classrooms. The multiple incubators allows us to ensure that each classroom has an incubator.
