Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are first-generation college-bound 10th graders and seniors. Our school is situated in a low-socioeconomic area with many students coming from impoverished homes. They are the curious minds that will be the engineers, doctors, researchers, and innovators of tomorrow. Mid-spring semester, my students learned that they would be remote learning and myself remote teaching.

My students are now having to overcome the challenges of remote learning.

Science is challenging enough to learn in person but even more so for my students learning from home. Creating material that students authentically learn from through remote learning takes crafting and manipulating of labs and work products into digital learning materials. Live demonstrations and presentations are a necessary component of learning science from home and access to reliable technology to teach science are important.

My Project

Access to technology to manipulate hands-on labs and activities into interactive digital activities has been a challenge. Manipulating what would normally be in-class activities into virtual ones is necessary for students to be able to fully grasp science concepts remotely.

My anatomy students need to visualize anatomical structures, and my biology students need to see how cells divide or transport vital nutrients.

Learning science remotely during these unprecedented times will become easier with access to 21st-century tools. Access to a Surface Tablet and Surface Pen will allow my students to learn from illustrations that are brought to life through the use of technology. I can add important details to create a more immersive learning experience for difficult science concepts.
