Science Classroom Needs for Highland East Tornado Recovery

My Students

Every teacher knows that studying helps improve test scores. Every teacher also knows that no kid enjoys studying. Having engaging review materials can help keep students involved and can help in retaining knowledge.

Highland East Jr.

High sustained heavy damage from the record-breaking F5 tornado that ripped through Moore on May 20, 2013. Of our 5 buildings, only our one main structure stands. Even still, this building has suffered major structural and water damage in the storms that have continued throughout the summer. Many of our resources and supplies have been destroyed. Our students have also suffered, many losing their homes in the surrounding neighborhoods. My kiddos are resilient and excited to come back to school. My 7th graders will be experiencing the excitement of junior high for the first time. I want them to have the same experience that classes before them have had, despite our devastation.

My Project

Small dry erase boards are great tools for review. They can be used in a group or individual setting and are a quick way for the teacher to check for understanding. These can also be used during initial instruction for drawing and creating images that show what they are gaining from the lesson. Children of all ages love to see and manipulate new knowledge, especially things that are not easy to see with the naked eye. Models are used as hands-on support for instruction, allowing learners to touch, see and feel what they are learning about.

HEJH and the surrounding neighborhoods will be rebuilt.

Our students will come back to school on August 16. However, none of us will ever be the same. School is a comfort and a safe place for my kiddos, and I want what is best for them. Having the proper tools and supplies to support their education will give back a sense of normalcy to students and teachers alike. Thank you for your consideration.
