This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My students need great books to learn about science. We study amazing things in second grade and we need thrilling literature for children to become immersed in their learning. Some of the topics we study, the students can walk outside and explore on their own. Other topics, like penguins, are very difficult to observe within our classroom.
Students need to be able to hold the books and read about these amazing creatures!
Our science focuses on the life cycles of different animals. We actually have caterpillars to grow in our rooms! The students need to see other life cycles, through books, to truly understand what the cycle of life is.
We are also studying penguins this year! We will learn about all the different kinds of penguins, from the amazing Emperor Penguin to the adorable Macaroni Penguin. Since we cannot bring the penguins into our classroom, we need these great books to show the students how these exotic and endangered creatures live.
Help us bring the world into the palm of our hands!
