This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our school, our biology classrooms lack the necessary equipment to safely complete laboratory activities. We lack gloves, goggles, aprons, and cabinets to safely store our chemicals.
My students are inquisitive, eager to learn, and just want the same opportunities as their more affluent peers when it comes to science education.
It is extremely difficult to learn biology without completing hands-on laboratories that allow students to use and develop their inquiry skills. It is even harder when your school lacks the basic, essential materials to even get started.
My Project
At this time, I am requesting the gloves, aprons, and (hopefully!) my students first laboratory kit - DNA Extraction! We would be able to reuse the aprons for all of our labs, and the gloves will go a long way! If we are able to get the DNA lab kit I know it will be a time in my students lives that they will never forget - especially as they literally wear their DNA around their necks! Through this lab they will understand how important DNA is and how it makes them unique from others.
This project is so important to me because I want nothing more than to be able to help my students have the same laboratory experiences that other students have and to hopefully inspire them to potentially pursue a career in the sciences some day.
