I have the privilege to teach at a Title I pre-K through 8th grade school just outside of Tallahassee, the Florida State capital. The school is in a rural area, with no public transportation to take them into the city, so many of them have little exposure to anything outside of their neighborhoods and school. Being a Title I school means that the majority of our students come from homes without a lot of advantages and learning opportunities. This makes what we do in our classrooms all the more important, as school is the only exposure many of our students get to many ideas, topics, and experiences.
Our students are eager to learn and want the opportunity to discover for themselves, especially through hands-on labs and activities.
Having the tools to expose them to the world through science is critical for this group of students, as most will not have the ability to learn in such a way anywhere else!
My Project
A good science class does more than teach concepts. Students need the opportunity to investigate for themselves. Without basic lab supplies, many fun and exciting investigations are simply not possible.
Mass and weight are important concepts for students to understand, and important building blocks for larger and broader topics.
These scales will allow us the option of doing a large number of investigations that we would be unable to do without them.
My group of students do not come from homes with a great deal of advantages. It is important to give them the greatest number of opportunities to explore, spark their interest, and keep them engaged.
