This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If a scientist cannot research without the proper tools, how can we expect first graders to research without the appropriate complex text needed?

My students are first graders in a dual language (Spanish Immersion) program at a public charter school in an urban community in Southern California, where 76% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Since it is a dual immersion class, 50% of my students are learning Spanish as their second language with no Spanish language support at home.

My Project

Now that we have implemented the Common Core Standards, the language arts anthology books are not enough to challenge our students to research and question what they read. With these books we can expand our science studies by integrating it with language arts. My students will learn to analyze text and find useful information that will help them understand the change in climate through the year.

It would allow for them to independently ask questions and search for the answers while continuing to build on their reading skills.
