All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. All of them want to learn and all of them are starving for education. Many of them are English Language Learners. They attend school in one of the most multicultural districts in the United States. Our school is close to two military bases and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.
My wonderful second graders attend a school designated as high poverty; many are deemed at risk; they generally do not have even the most basic of supplies.
My students do not have money for basic school supplies. They cannot afford to go on field trips. They rarely visit a public library. They do not have access to books or technology outside of school.
My Project
Our district is facing a very difficult funding shortfall, and we have been told there is absolutely no money for supplies. I am asking for tape to extend the life of the books in our classroom library, seven new science books, erasers and an inexpensive laminator with extra pouches.
I need to finish this year on a high note so I am asking for a few new things for our classroom.
Science has been almost forgotten in our curriculum. I need exciting books that will spark an interest in science. I plan to put these in our new science center. It will be a free-choice center that students can choose when they have their work done.
The tape and laminator will be used to extend the usefulness of our new books. I also plan to make some brag tags for my science readers. Students will get a laminated tag for every three books they read.
