My school is situated in a high poverty area. Sadly enough, the budget has zero allowance at the start of each school year to purchase even some of the most basic art supplies. The buildings are old, but are organized in a pleasant open-air space. It is populated by vivacious children,n who are mild-mannered and eager to learn.
After Hurricane Irma, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse, and they are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies, now that we are welcoming displaced students, affected by Hurricane Maria, the challenges are even greater.
Being mostly first-generation immigrants, some of the students I teach, come from countries where schools barely had the minimum to teach core subjects, let alone the visual arts.
For most, art is a foreign subject to them. When they first set their eyes on my art class, I see stars in their eyes. They are mesmerized by all of the possibilities art has to offer. Discovering the visual arts, fuels their imagination and opens up their mind to their new community. The visual arts drives their creativity through an enjoyable learning process.
My art students need a 3D printer and filament to print out their STEAM science and art projects. As previously mentioned, many of my students have very limited access to technology outside of school, making their computer and keyboarding skills close to non-existent.
Because our school is pre-designated to be a STEAM institution, by next school year, my students need to be exposed to art technology, which includes coding and 3D printing.
We started coding classes just three weeks ago, and there are students on a waiting list because of insufficient materials to accommodate the increasing numbers.
We need at least two more 3D printers, so I am requesting these resources one at a time. Your donation would allow more students to learn how to code and create.
