Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach second grade at O.W. Holmes Elementary School in Chicago. My school serves approximately 750 students in grades Preschool - 8, over 95% of whom qualify for free or reduced price lunches. This will be my first year teaching second grade, and I will be teaching the same students I had as first graders last year. In our first school year together, I frequently integrated read alouds into our science and social studies explorations. My students greatly enjoyed these learning experiences, and they often elected to look at the books on their own time. I'd like to carry this experience to second grade with us. However, I lack many books relating to second grade curriculum! All of the books I have selected pertain directly to what we will be studying this year, and many of the titles are recommended by the curricula guides used at my school. If I can make these books a permanent part of my classroom library, I am confident that my students will read and reread them with as much enthusiasm as second graders as they did in first grade!
