My students are in a self-contained class for significant cognitive and physical disabilities. Most of the students have autism or intellectual disabilities.
They are the most amazing kiddos you will ever meet who teach me as much as I teach them.
They love life and enjoy learning by moving and exploring. More than anything they love themselves and each other just as they are! You will never find a more accepting and loving bunch!
Our school houses the district's EC Program and my class is one of the three most significant. We educate students from all over the county in an environment that meets their individual needs. As a school, more than half come from low-income families with the entire school receiving free breakfast and some who receive free/reduced lunch.
My Project
My students love learning social studies and science with Scholastic books and Magazines! They enjoy extending and applying that knowledge through Scholastic Rebus Readers. It's engaging, and hands-on learning. My students play games, watch videos, and, most importantly, have FUN while exploring the world around them.
Don't you remember Scholastic Magazines when you were a kid?
I loved getting them, reading through them, and taking them home to treasure. Would you consider giving my class of students with disabilities this experience?
The students in my classroom all have disabilities which affect their ability to learn with their peers. I wish you could see the pride on their face when they are able to use and understand words like "habitat" and "gratitude" all because of the lessons in Scholastic books and magazines. Clifford's My Big World Magazine and Science Spin Magazine are engaging and culturally relevant media that teach my student's on their intellectually level. The magazine comes with online access to videos and games that my students ask for again and again.
The Rebus Readers are supplemental books that go along with the presented lessons in the magazines. These books will help with reading and comprehension by relating it back to the information they have just learned in the magazine. They are presented with repeated storylines and picture assistance that allows my non-readers to access them independently.
