Science and History: Novel Study of The Green Glass Sea

My students need to read this novel in chemistry class in order to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of chemistry advancements and history on society and the world.

My Students

I work in a large school full of a wide array of students from different cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. My chemistry students are eager to learn and connect on a personal level to what I teach. Many students are working hard to overcome their circumstances in order to become successful. While some students have had the opportunity to connect their education to personal experiences, such as trips or museums, many have not. ESL and immigrant students also populate our school. These students learn best through connecting curriculum with personal experiences.

My Project

Students will learn the history behind the creation of the atom bomb as well as the moral and ethical implications of this technology. The novel tells the story of the atom bomb and it's use through the eyes of middle school aged children. My students will have the opportunity to discuss these issues as well as create projects to help them explore the history and the relevance of the topic in today's world. This project being funded will allow me to connect the science that I teach with history as well as allow students to begin thinking about moral or ethical issues that arise because of scientific advancements.
