Help me give my students Simple Machine books, Engineering books, Simple Machines activity set, IO blocks, Action building set, City Engineering & Design Building set, colored pencils, multicultural crayons and glue sticks.
I was born and raised in Hāna. I’m honored to teach in Hāna, Maui in the state of Hawaiʻi. We’re geographically isolated and therefore have strong community relationships. Our kupuna (elders) are revered and pass on knowledge to future generations. The mission of our school is Kaʻike a ke kulanakauhale a pau he hei na ke keiki (the knowledge of the whole village is absorbed by the child). I love that my students have dreams for the future. In my room, I have engineers, scientists, artists, fisherman, hunters, farmers, mathematicians, doctors, authors or whatever their heart desires.
My Project
My elementary school is located on the beautiful East end of Maui. Our School is a Title I school. Roughly 80% of our student population are Hawaiian or Part Hawaiian. Our school is located in a high poverty area and all students receive free meals through a federal program. it
Our school is isolated and therefore our students have limited access to supplies in order to be successful.
In order to get to it, you have to drive the windy road past 54 bridges in order to reach our town. So you can imagine how difficult it can be for students to travel for two hours to gather basic school supplies. In my classroom, students work collaboratively. I believe in inquiry-based learning and would like my students to have the opportunity to become engineers. I believe with these resources my students will be able to create amazing things. With the resources provided students will be able to create simple machines and work collaboratively to come up with unique designs. Next month my students will be designing a creating leprechaun traps using simple machines. They’ll have to also construct a working leprechaun trap which students may have to adjust along the way or rebuild. Mahalo for your support!
