Science and Engineering Projects

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is very energetic and very exciting for my students. I do a lot of experiments and students do a lot of hands on activities that keep them curious. like a scientist. My favorite quote is - "If you can dream it you can do it!" Students do an "I wonder" question every day.

We are an elementary school building grades K-6.

My students are very curious and active there are 75 of them and they are in the sixth grade. We are from a small town and a small school where funding is limited. Teachers as well as the students at our school work very hard for each other. We have about a 50-60% free and reduced lunches, so you can see that supplies could be a problem. There is an equal ratio of girls and boys and our classroom size is around 20-25 per room. The community is very close and the school is an important part of its success.

My Project

My students need to have supplies so they can do Science experiments My students use design journals which start as simple notebooks to help with STEM - we use a dozen duck tape, paperclips, wire, 90 glue sticks, journals, paper, etc. My classroom is set up so students can do a lot of collaborating and sharing their ideas. We do a lot of hands-on activities and design and conduct experiments. - My students have around 6 units of study in Science and with every lesson their is approximately one to two experiments or design and engineering activities. This year we will be making sun models to show the layers of the sun, electric circuits, making posters for the design process. We also have an energy unit where we will be making roller coasters and bottle racers (Lots of tape, wire, post-its, and glue are needed for this activities.) - We do all of our designing and sketching, vocabulary, key concepts and experiments right in our Science Journals . - Students take a lot of ownership of their journals and are very proud of how great they look. This is a tool that will help the students become more geared to handle things in the real world.

Donations to this project will allow my students to think outside the box and be able to problem solve with others as well as themselves.

With donations to our Science curriculum, we can do activities that have been skipped before because of funding. This will allow the students to have a better understanding of what it takes to work together and to be a good teammate. It will also teach students time management and budgeting. The end result will be a citizen that has better life skills.
