Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Children benefit significantly when they are able to explore academic subjects through a hands-on approach. The students in my class will achieve a higher academic knowledge by having the Science Instant Learning Centers from Lakeshore. It will allow the children to not only become intrigued with science, but acquire academic language to help them succeed in life while exploring a scientific field in a hands-on manner. I am a Special Education teacher. My program, a special day class (SDC), is for children who are in the K-2 grade levels. Typically my program has thirteen students who have speech and language deficits. I work at a program improvement school where over 50% of the children come for low economic backgrounds and English is their second language. Currently, half of my students are homeless and do not always have opportunities to explore the world around them in order to develop their curiosity skills. In my program, I integrate science into my students' English Language Development (ELD) period. By incorporating science and ELD it allows the children to obtain academic language. Therefore, it is imperative that the students in my program have an abundance of projects that allow them to be completely involved in their learning so that they can hear, see, and touch the items we are talking about in class. By using centers, the children will have an opportunity to use authentic and academic language, investigate the scientific topics in a small group setting, as well as have the ability to assist one another, which allows them to be accountable for their own success. During science/ ELD, the children will be engaged in a whole class discussion on the topic and then they will be separated into groups in order to facilitate their own learning experiences. The Science Instant Learning Centers from Lakeshore will be used throughout the year in order to supplement the students' understanding of different types of sciences. The hand-on approach of these centers will support the children's success in science and language development.
