My students need books that are at their independent reading levels. Many of our J-O books are old, and many are missing pages. We would love to add new books to our library.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our favorite quotes are: "Never give up" and "We learn from our mistakes". This year students learned about shifting their fixed mindsets to growth mindsets. They no longer give up on challenging tasks. They no longer say they can't complete the task. Instead, they say "I can't do this, YET".
Most of my students come from poverty stricken homes.
They are entitled to free lunch. Academically they are functioning at grade levels 1 through 5. Half of my students have been retained in previous grades. Many of my students love coming to school because they want "to stretch" their brains.
My school ensures that all children learn. Students feel welcome and safe at my school.
My Project
Let me start by saying that my students love to read. They look forward to visiting our classroom library on their assigned "shopping day" to return and checkout new books. They read independently at their desks when they are finished with a task. They choose to read instead of sitting idle at their desks. They borrow books to take home because they are assigned 30 minutes of independent reading daily. Students read everyday to develop fluency and comprehension. They maintain a reading log and write a response to literature. They want to attain their goals which is to read at least 30 books this school year as well as move up four reading levels. In addition, students will develop their critical thinking skills by analyzing characters, settings and key details in the texts. They will learn how to make text-to-text connections as well as text-to-world connections. My students need books that are at their independent reading levels.
Many of my students' guardians do not take their children to the local library because of different reasons.
Having an up-to-date portable library will help students develop fluency, accuracy and comprehension. Donations will improve literacy skills in my classroom. Students will continue to love reading books. More importantly, read books at their independent levels.
