All students deserve the opportunity to focus and engage while in school! We are a cluster school that serves students with disabilities from grade K-8. Like any student our cluster students will experience friendships, learn new topics, and develop their personalities. Beyond that, my students will learn how to cope in a loud school with overwhelming stimuli. Like anyone, students with disabilities can be sensitive to an overwhelming setting which can result in student outbursts, distractions, or melt downs. Therefore, a quiet place where the students can take sensory breaks will be used to proactively maintain positive behavior by allowing students to recharge and come back to the classroom refocused!
My students will succeed everyday in school with the benefits of a sensory room where they can refocus, manage their emotions, and release built up energy.
All the students in my classroom come to be friends, scholars, and work towards one day being independent community members. A sensory room will help teach the students coping strategies and self-management skills. The sensory room will be a positive place where students choose to go when they need to release energy in order to come back to the classroom refreshed!
A full school day can be long and draining for any student, especially for young students that are still developing their coping skills. Help create our school's FIRST sensory room! Our sensory room will be used by students multiple times throughout the day as a way to maintain and encourage positive behaviors. When students begin to feel overwhelmed or upset during the school day the sensory room will be a positive place they can go for 2-15 minutes to relax, receive sensory input, and focus on preferred activities.
Students will actively develop their coping skills and social skills by requesting breaks to the sensory room and requesting preferred items.
We are looking to add exciting sensory input items like a crash pad. We also look to add both a sand table and a water table, these supports will be used for students to relax and release energy on an activity they enjoy. These high interest items will add excitement and relaxation to a hectic school day for students with special needs!
