My students need 1 aquarium chiller in which to raise our salmon to maturity.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Tilley's classroom raised $577
This project is fully funded
I am a teacher at an inner city Expeditionary Learning (EL) school. EL is a method of instruction that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, teamwork and in-depth studies. Every spring, my students do an in-depth study in the field of science and this year we have chosen to study the life cycle of the Pacific Salmon and the impact that people have on this fish.
In order to study the salmon (and river trout) we purchase baby(fry) fish and raise them in our classroom. By caring for the fry, we are hoping to increase the natural reproduction numbers in the Genesee River, where the fingerlings are eventually released in the spring. In order to raise the fish, we need to get our aquarium below a certain temperature (50 degrees) and to do this, it is necessary to purchase a chiller. Our classroom aquarium currently has a chiller, but it does not work properly.
For the last few years, in order to keep the aquarium at the proper temperature, my students have had to add snow from the outdoors into the aquarium because the chiller was not functioning adequately. Although we live in the north and snow is abundant, it takes a lot of time (and work) out of the day to keep monitoring the aquarium.
Our students become so invested in the salmon that they have chosen to raise. Each day they clean the tank, inspect the fish, monitor the pH and ammonia levels for danger, and record their findings. It would make our job so much easier if we had the proper equipment to raise the fish. These fish are a necessary part of the food chain and our students learn so much about the negative effects that people can have on our environment when we act selfishly. Please help us keep this project moving forward.
