Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr. Suess. Our students need to be exposed to a variety of printed material from a very young age.
I work with elementary school special education students in the South Bronx.
The students are often eager and excited to learn. They just don't have the same access or opportunities outside the school as some of their peers. As a teacher, I have to find ways to provide access to literature at various stages of literacy development and interests.
My Project
The students will use the materials in small guided reading groups. We will work on expanding their command of sight words, decoding, fluency and comprehension. Students will also use the headphones in the listening center and to read books on the iPads.
The books donated will be integrated into lessons.
It will provide students with access to books that scaffold and help develop early literacy skills. The early biographies will help to introduce non-fiction to students in the lower grades. The super hero books will peak their interest and motivate the students to read.
