Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a school-wide project. Our school has about 500 students. Students range from early childhood (age 3) to 5th grade. 86% of our students are Hispanic, many of them are English Language Learners. About 94% of our students come from low economic status families. However, because of the overall population of our school district 100% of students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. In addition 13% of students receive special education services. This number includes 2 PPCD (preschool program for children with disabilities) classrooms that provide services for all preschool students within the district who qualify for special education support.
My Project
Students will participate in a school-wide disability awareness project based on the book Only One You by Linda Kranz. Each classroom will read the book. Then, each student will have the chance to decorate their own rock that will then be placed in a new rock garden in the front of the school.
Approximately 13% of students at my school qualify for special education services.
Students at this school have a variety of disabilities. Because this is an inclusive school community, Autism Awareness Month in April is celebrated on an annual basis. This project will be focal point of this year's celebration.
