This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a loving, energetic group of at-risk students at an urban Title I school in the heart of Manhattan. Many of my students are English Language Learners, have special needs, or are safety transfer students who struggle because they have not had equal opportunities to gain the fundamental skills they need to be successful in high school, and specifically in our mathematics classroom.

Many of my students this year will have me as a teacher for both math, as well as art, which allows for tremendous opportunities to integrate the two subjects.

While my students tend to struggle and be far behind grade level in mathematics, they tend to love and thrive off of the arts in all aspects. This means that their engagement skyrockets when the arts are involved in our mathematics classes.

My Project

I teach in a low-income, Title I urban school, where many of my students' families struggle to buy school supplies during a normal school year. Many of my students struggle to find value in school because the inequities of the education system have wronged them in the past, and the difficulties in their home lives take priority over bringing a pencil to class each day. Every year, I try to raise enough money to buy my students' fundamental school supplies to lessen their burden.

This upcoming year, in particular, I want to make sure I have enough supplies to start the year strong because after many of my students were deeply affected by coronavirus and the struggles of remote learning, they deserve to come back to the best year possible.

These basic supplies, such as pencils, notebook paper, binder dividers, color pencils, and dry erase markers might seem small but are truly the foundation for a smooth year. These supplies will help my students write their math problems each day and stay organized in ways that are crucial to their growth as students and individuals.
