My Students

Do you remember the first day of school and how exciting it was to show up with all your new school supplies? For my students, this is NOT their reality.

Deaf, Deaf/Blind, orthopedically, cognitively impaired, autistic..... I have them all.

We are one big happy family. Most of them are non-verbal but are learning to communicate in a supportive environment. They love "hands on" activities such as cooking, working in the "garden", completing their classroom jobs. Their favorite part of the day is Circle Time. They know the routine so well that I can practically sit back and let them take over. They help each other, take turns, scold each other, just as if they are "mini me's". Most of my students come from very impoverished homes. So I know that their time with me should be so much more than just educational and when I see the smiles on their faces or the tears in their eyes when they have to go home early, I know it is. While everyday might not go as I plan, and sometimes my classroom looks likes a disaster zone, I know that everyday will be different and challenging in its own way.

My Project

Basic necessities such as crayons, markers, and glue sticks (they must be the purple disappearing glue for the visually impaired children) allow my students the creative means by which to explore scribbling, coloring, drawing, letter formation, cutting and gluing. We are activity driven with a focus on literacy and math skills. This means that everything we do revolves around making activities meaningful and purposeful for each and every student at their individual level. The printer ink will ensure that I will be able to print out the sign language and text to accompany our experience language based stories. Because these children are also very susceptible to illness, infection control plays a huge roll in our everyday routine. The supplies listed for cleaning will help me to keep our classroom and equipment wiped down between nightly "bleaching". This will no doubt help me, once again, have the healthiest children in the school.

My students deserve a positive educational experience every single day they are able to come to school.

It is my duty as their teacher to ensure that happens. I would be honored if you would help me provide them with basic supplies.
