Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students who attend our school are a mixture of different economic and cultural backgrounds. We are a Title I school with over 75% entitled to free lunch. I have over 60 ESL students and many students with IEPs who challenge themselves every day to achieve beyond the expectations of their socio-economic backgrounds. Our school also has a large population of students whose families are either undocumented or are new to this country through the Lottery Visa program.
These students work hard and have proven to take pride and ownership of their work.
My Project
Although these are basic school supplies (pens, folders, tissues, Clorox wipes), they are luxuries to me and my future students. One of the biggest struggles I encounter every year is to provide pens for my high school students. Although they are accustomed to writing in pencil, in order for them to be prepared for state exams, the SATs, and ACTs they must be comfortable writing with pens. Very often, students will not have pens on any given day. With this generous grant, I will be able to graciously give pens to students and not have to waste instructional time dealing with a "lending" system to ensure I can get the pens back. Furthermore, giving pens away to students who are in need will create a trusting and charitable environment in our classroom.
As the school year progresses, it is important that we are able to keep our desktops graffiti-free in order to maintain order and focus within the classroom, which is why I requested the Clorox wipes.
Lastly, providing tissues for sick students is another act of kindness that goes a long way toward creating a classroom community.
