Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of 6-year-old students with a variety of academic needs. Many of my first graders live in poverty and struggle with remote learning. Since early April of 2020, our inner-city school has been closed to slow the spread of the coronavirus. My kiddos are always lacking the learning resources, such as computers and the internet service, to participate in virtual learning. Some of my friends rely on smartphones to be able to complete schoolwork. Many of my first graders also miss out on school meals due to lack of transportation and some are dealing with trauma at home. Because of school closures, my young friends are missing the stability and a sense of security of our classroom that the school provides.

My Project

I would like to provide my first grade students with back to school necessities for the re-opening of the new school year. I would like to start the school year well prepared and ready to learn, despite it being different than in past years. I'm trying to focus on health, safety and academics, therefore I have selected hand sanitizers wipes and face masks to help reduce any flu pandemic. I've also added other classroom resources such as math manipulative, construction paper, pencils, crayons, calendar chart and pencil sharpener because they can significantly increase student achievement by supporting student learning. The flex-space cushion that I've selected will also give 2 of my students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.

Most of this distance learning project can be used at home or can also be used in the classroom for each individual student.

If distance learning continues in the Fall, I will make packages of supplies for my students to use at home, and if it begins in the classroom, I will also make individual packages for students to use and not share.
