My Students

There is no 'typical day' in my classroom because I aim to make each day different. We are a Title I School where the students receive free breakfast and lunch. 99% of my students are African American and come from many diverse backgrounds including English Language Learners and families with low incomes. These factors don't phase them; As I get to know my students, I am learning that many of them face challenges in their lives that I, as an adult, would not be able to navigate.

For them our school is a safe haven and we work hard to provide them with the tools and inspiration that they need to be productively engaged and inspired to work towards their goals.

Children raised in tough economic conditions often have difficulty visualizing and pursuing the steps necessary to accomplish their goals. I have a lot of scholars who are consumed by music, but have no outlet to express themselves. Many of them would like to have a career in music, however, they are not aware of what they can do now to pursue this dream. We want music to come alive in our middle school!

My Project

My students need a pioneer DJ controller, bag, speakers, microphone and cable to help us inspire digital media arts and share our music with the school through Gym Jams Dances and productions lead by students for students! Our scholars will be introduced to the world of DJing and digital media arts. Scholars will learn how to use the equipment and software. Scholars will also compare DJing to developing the plot of a story (DJing vs English Language Arts). This program will include seminars, presentations, group discussions, and hands on DJ teaching experience. This will save the school money by having students run various school events and bring true school spirit.

This equipment will help us to transform traditional music education into one more fitting of today’s technological society.

Also it will help to promote, increase, and cultivate a positive self-image among the disadvantaged youth of Baltimore, Maryland.
