Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a classroom of diverse transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students - multiethnic, multicultural, and multilingual. My students may have different interests and abilities, but do they all have one thing in common, an excitement to learn and a lot of personality! They love to read books from my classroom library, practice math, do art, and "get their dance on."

My TK and kindergarten students are highly inquisitive and have an insatiable curiosity about the world.

Since for many of the students, TK or kindergarten is their first schooling experience, we work on a lot of social-emotional skills in addition to academic ones. They are learning to be citizens of the world and we work hard each and every day to learn, practice, and apply new skills to help achieve our goals.

My Project

The ukuleles I'm requesting will help my kindergarteners in so many ways. Learning to play instruments can boost brain development and can also help young students with fine motor skills. The exposure to music training on a daily basis can lead to increased maturity in children's auditory systems, which can positively impact language development and reading skills, foundational tools for success in life.

Learning to play an instrument can increase a child's neuroplasticity, meaning a child's brain can physiologically change as a result of regular music training.

To have tools that have a positive impact on brain development, especially in this digital age where many students have had so much exposure to technology that has affected brain development since their earliest years, is so important.

We sing songs every day and use them as tools for learning new concepts. We have a song about the days of the week, months of the year, sequencing ideas, and even science concepts like forces and motion, to name a few! Being able to add the element of instrumentation with ukuleles would give my kindergarteners' brains a big boost!
