Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I just inherited a school library whose previous librarian was there for 34 years!!!! I am the high school librarian for students in grades 9-12. The academic competencies of the students run the gamut from illiterate at-risk readers, through suitcases packed for Ivy League Colleges.
My predecessor had been in this library for 34 years, and in all that time, I don't think the posters have been changed. Moreover, the bulletin boards are not decorated or inviting. The library is a dingy, pedestrian ghost town and I want to change that and transform it into a buzzing literary metropolis.
I need some colorful posters and frames & some bulletin board paper and borders that my students and I can use to brighten up the library and encourage students to visit it. After all, what good is a school library if students don't venture inside of it or derive any sense of wonder when escorted there with their classes. Bill and Melinda Gates encourage high school teachers to write proposals that specify how their ideas will help students succeed in college---well, if students don't read, don't know how to use a library and the resources housed there, or don't know how to research, they won't achieve in college. Furthermore, if students don't visit their school libraries, they won't learn these skills. My proposal will help to encourage students to check out their high school library and only then can they possibly begin to learn these essential skills that will help them master the academic demands of college.
I hope you appreciate the vital importance of school libraries and are interested in helping me and my students conduct a preliminary remodeling so that we can attract students into the library in the very beginning of school. I want to motivate them to develop a library-going habit early to carry them through their next few years of high school.
