My students need Book Club sets of "Cut", "Thirteen Reasons Why," and "The Hunger Games" to encourage a reading culture on campus.
Can you imagine a world without reading? Unfortunately, many of my students are living in this world. I am the high school librarian at a large urban high school (9-12 grade) in California. The school consists of primarily a Hispanic population with only about 20% scoring proficient in reading skills on our annual state testing.
I want to help my students bolster their reading scores and discover the magic of literature. The only way to do this that I know of, is to expose them to compelling reading material at a comprehension level they can independently access about subjects that are personally relevant to them. Please help me encourage reading and show my student that it can be a breathtaking experience. And help me continue to motivate those students who are slowly coming around and expressing an interest in reading.
I need to purchase sets of engaging novels (7-10) for my Book Club small groups. Each intimate literature circle is facilitated by an adult and consists of 7-10 students who are all reading the same book. In this way, students are able to share often, receive immediate help from their group if they don't understand an aspect of the book, and take turns reading aloud. The skills the students learn in their Book Club groups will immeasurably help them once they enter college---their comprehension will be fortified, their comfort with literary analysis will be strengthened, and their enjoyment of and familiarity with books will be heightened.
Please won't you help me inspire my students to love reading and talking about literature with small groups by helping me buy sets of novels for Book Club. We can only sustain this Book Club with the generosity of local organizations and philanthropic people such as yourself!!!!
