Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from diverse social-economic and ethnic backgrounds all living in the inner-city of Richmond, CA. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students qualifying for free and reduced price lunch. Our Pre-K to 6th grade programs serve over 500 students, with a mission to develop growth mindsets and efficacy for all of our students.
For our students, living in the "Iron Triangle" of Richmond can often mean a life exposed to trauma, limited resources and limited life experiences.
We strive to provide a safe, enriching culture that sets a tone of stability that our students may not experience due to struggles of poverty.
My Project
As the School Psychologist and Garden Coordinator, I try to engage, educate, and build relationships with our student through the garden and art therapy. My individual and group therapy sessions for at risk kids, both in my office and in the garden, need some supplies.
These supplies are essential tools and resources to help my therapy sessions and our school garden.
The chickens help build the school community and are a nice therapy tool; and the mealworms are an excellent way to train the chickens. The art supplies is an excellent way to interact with students, to ease anxiety and allow them to express themselves through art and to create a more comfortable therapeutic environment.
