I am a School Counselor so I don't have a typical classroom setting. I do a lot of individual counseling. The area I address the most is Conflict Resolution. To quote God, "grant me the Serenity to accept the things I can not change, the Courage to the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference."
I work at an inner city Magnet School for students 6th-8th grade.
The student population is about 750 with about 90% African American and a high population of free and reduced lunch. The students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to remain at the school. That means my students usually perform well academically. When it comes to Social Skills they are no different from any other adolescent trying to figure out who they are and where they belong, which is why I would like to address the issue of Self-Acceptance and Conflict Resolution.
My Project
I am requesting 4 iPads and 1 iPad case for my students. As I stated earlier I deal a lot with conflict resolution. Most of the conflicts deal with personal perception. I would like to use the app Be Confident, which is laid out like a graphic novel and follows six friends learning what middle school is about. This will help those 6th graders having trouble transitioning to middle school. Another app I would like to use is Hannah Rose, which encourages kids to improve self-expression, self-confidence, and compassion for others. These are just a couple of the apps I would use. I also would like to use the iPad to assist with teaching about Cyber Bullying, which is a new issue today with technology.
The donation of these iPads would help improve our school in so many ways.
As I stated earlier, the apps can help conflict resolution because it would teach them problem solving skills, which would decrease the number of referrals for fighting. Also, if we can increase the students' self-expression, self-confidence and compassion, it would improve the overall environment of the school. Cyber-bullying education would hopefully decrease conflict and suspensions as well.
