School and Dinosaurs: Topics 2nd Graders Can Dig Into!

My Students

Every day, I have the joy of creating memories of success, failure, and perseverance while teaching kindergartners the joys of learning.

My kindergartners want to be the best that they can, yet our state is last in school funding.

We are a Title I school, where everyone receives free breakfast and most receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students come from trauma-filled backgrounds, low-income​ families, and will be the first to go to college. Despite these struggles, my five-year-old scholars are still inquisitive. They are full of questions, from the iconic "Why is the sky blue?" to the question I was asked the other day, "Why do apples come in different colors?" I want my students to further their curiosity by learning how to read, write, do math, and be knowledgeable about the world. Furthermore, I want them to go home and share their learning with their families.

My Project

Our school is becoming a K-12 Expeditionary Learning school.

A facet of our new curriculum is coming together as a school community and exploring learning together, then sharing with the larger community.

I have the required books on our themes of going to school and past versus present for my kindergarten students, but our second grade mentors need the books on their level to explore the same things.

Our second grade buddies need the requested books to learn more about the past (fossils and dinosaurs). The second graders will learn through both fiction texts (to write their own stories to read to my students) using facts they learn from the nonfiction texts (such as some dinosaurs are omnivores).

These topics are very popular with kindergarten. Then our students, despite being two grade levels apart, can have common discussions on dinosaurs to practice speaking and listening skills.
