This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is essential to life and academic success. My students need more books to help them to become life-long readers and learners. A set of "just right" books could really help my students with their overall reading success and academic progress.

My classroom is filled with 24 vibrant, eager five year olds.

They come from a community filled with poverty, homelessness, and crime but they are filled with hope. Our school is a public elementary school located in an industrial and commercial community of New York City. The school has a high African-American and Hispanic population. Many of the students have parents who have newly immigrated to the United States. In spite of it all, these students are motivated to achieve their goals and to make their families proud of their achievements.

My Project

I want my students to succeed in reading, but they need more books. The resources provided at my school are not adequate enough to meet their needs. My students need a wide variety of books to peak their interest in reading. They need fiction and non-fiction books, sight word readers, and social studies readers that will expose them to different texts and improve their reading accuracy and comprehension. All students deserve to have appropriate books that help them to become confident readers and confident writers. I want to provide this for my students. They need more books in the classroom library for them to enjoy and to develop their reading skills. I do not want them to be discouraged and frustrated with books that they cannot read or with books that are too simple for them. A new set of books will stimulate them to read more books for pleasure and for general knowledge.

Donations to this project will help my students to improve their reading levels and reading skills.

It will also help my students foster a love of learning through reading books about different topics and in different content areas. They will feel joy, excitement, and enthusiasm in knowing that they are reading interesting books on their reading levels. This will help them to foster a love of learning. Thank you for your consideration.
