Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic learners. They love reading about real animals and people. I want to foster this love for reading by bringing in Scholastic News. This will allow us to bring Science and Social Studies into our classroom on a weekly basis.

This year, my students are excited to be at school.

Many are struggling with reading and math, but come to school ready to learn. They are respectful of each other and their teacher. We have fun while learning. They are learning to read and love books. They gravitate toward non-fiction books about animals, but also enjoy the Fly Guy series and The Magic Treehouse. My students come from low-income homes and many have parents who are very supportive of their learning, while others have more difficult home lives. They really enjoy their time at school and are disappointed when we have a day off. This year, I have 8 ELD students and two visually impaired students. I really love teaching this group of kids!

My Project

We will use Scholastic News once a week to focus on Science and/or Social Studies, but also to familiarize ourselves with informational text. Through reading the magazine, I hope to create class discussions and encourage research of interesting topics. I want my students to be aware of the world around them.

We have a classroom library with many fictional books, but I would like to increase the amount of informational text that my students are exposed to.

I want them to love reading magazines as much as books. I want them to see that words and information are all around us and how important it is to read. Students will be connected to information that would not otherwise be possible.
