My students need Scholastic News to provide practice of the skills necessary to be independent and critical readers, such as identifying text features.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Bowzer's classroom raised $197

My Students
My classroom contains a diverse group of 5th and 6th graders in an elementary school. My goal is to prepare the students for middle school. The biggest challenge is to get them to see their potential and connect to the world, which is what I hope to achieve with Scholastic News.
My students come from a wide range of backgrounds and are 5th and 6th graders.
They participate in most activities together, learning the same information in reading, writing, science and social studies. We have two lessons each day for math to ensure that each grade's needs are being met. We have a very cohesive classroom community and if someone were to walk into the class, they would struggle to see which students are 5th and which are 6th.
My Project
The Scholastic News magazines will be utilized as a supplement to our current reading program. It will help students to learn about current events while learning to read critically and utilize text features. It will give them real world application for these strategies as well as provide additional material for social studies and science. I foresee us using this on Friday's to work on the reading strategies that we have been focusing on that week.
This will connect students to real world events.
It will prepare students for reading non-fiction texts and using text features to analyze what they are reading. It will also help students to meet the Common Core Standards in reading and writing.
