My Students

My class comes from an area in Winston Salem that is very diverse. We are close to downtown and a major hospital practically sits in our parking lot. On one end of the street there are doctors living nearby in the more historic areas and surrounded by medical buildings. But on the other side of the street we have the not-so-historic, run-down side. Our school is a Title I school with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. Forget reduced-price lunch. Here, all kids are guaranteed a warm breakfast and lunch free of charge.

This year our school has the highest number of students enrolled from the Red Cross Homeless Shelter than we've ever seen.

Many other students are bused to us from the Children's Home, for orphans and domestic abuse victims and their children, which is right around the next corner.

Another thing that sets us apart, is that the district HAG program is held at our school. Polar opposites right!?! The HAG program brings an extreme shift to the economic diversity of our students. The two sides couldn't be more father apart than the north and south pole.

Our differences make us stronger!

My Project

Having Scholastic News in the classroom will give my students a variety of nonfiction stories about global and local events. These readers would expose them to new vocabulary they wouldn't normally come across in 'stories'. My students would be able to practice these in class, buddy read with partners and take home to practice again to build their fluency. Scholastic News also has map skills, graphing math skills, geography, science and comprehension questions on the back of each issue that will support ongoing learning of the second grade curriculum. The magazines get more challenging throughout the school year as children become better readers so they will continue to support and challenge students all year long.
