My Students

My students attend school in an inner city Title I School District. Our school has had funds reduced every year. This has taken a huge toll on everyone. I have purchased almost all the supplies my students will need this year. However, I am unable to afford everything on my own.

My students need something fun and uplifting to read as a class.

I would love to purchase a class set of Scholastic News Magazines to give my students something fun to read while practice third grade skills such as main idea, and theme.

These magazines would also be beneficial to my class because the students can take them home once the class has read them. A lot of students do not have reading material at home, so these magazine would serve a dual purpose within the class.

My Project

These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because they will be able to read about different topics weekly. Being able to offer different themes and genres will open my readers to new topics they may not have been aware of before. Offering different types of reading materials will also pull in those readers who don't know they like reading yet!

Scholastic News offers interesting articles, with great pictures.

The pictures are important because it helps the students relate the story, and it gives them a lot of background information about what they are reading. These are both critical third grade reading skills.

Lastly, my students will be allowed to take these magazines home, and start their own collection. My students will be able to read the magazines over and over. This is important for the children that do not have books at home.
