Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Keep first graders engaged! I teach first grade in a K-8 school in a large city. My classroom is a buzz of activity with thirty students cheering each others' achievements in reading, writing, math, science and social studies.
The children are truly a community of learners who are reassured that it's OK to make mistakes and that is in fact, how people learn.
All of my students truly enjoy STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning because it's fun! My students need STEM materials to stay engaged.
My Project
"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science." ~Edwin Powell Hubble. This quote says so much in a few words. Children are naturally curious beings! These magazines will provide a starting point for questions and investigations! I teach thirty amazing First Graders in an inner city school.Several of my students are English Language Learners. Early readers rely on photographs and labeled diagrams to learn new words and vocabulary.
The children are eager to learn, but many of them depend exclusively on school for all of their reading material.
Scholastic News and Science Spin are age appropriate magazines that are of high interest to First graders! Each magazine covers subjects including plants, animals, dental health, and summer safety, as well as Social Studies topics including holidays such as Columbus Day, President's Day, and Memorial Day as well as community workers. I've had Scholastic News this past school year. These magazines are an amazing resource for my students. The subscriptions include short videos on the topics as well as skills sheets.
The students enjoy reading the magazine in class and bringing it home to share with their parents.
The topics covered are part of the Common Core curriculum. The Teacher Edition provides graphic organizers for the children to improve skills in Main Idea/Details, reading for understanding, and more! Due to drastic cuts in the budget, these magazines will not be available without your support.
