Help me give my students access to current events and high interest topics about the world around them!

My students walk into the building every day ready to further their education through hands-on learning experiences, with the help of their classmates and teachers alike. Even though most of these students come from low-income areas, they come to school to better themselves and strive to learn something new every single day.
Our class is very diverse in terms of learning abilities, yet everyone is willing to collaborate and learn together.
We strive to make sure everyone is getting the resources they need to become successful. These 4th graders are passionate about learning and eager to continue their education!
Every student deserves to be able to connect to the world around them, but in low-income areas, there is often limited access to kid-friendly, current, nonfiction reading materials. Thanks to Scholastic News Magazines my students would not only be able to constantly review and practice literacy skills, but they will be able to read articles at an appropriate text level that open their mind to the world.
Each week, we will use the articles in Scholastic News to connect our literacy skill to a real-world example!
Scholastic News gives students the ability to read stories about people (and sometimes things) which change the world. In the past, my students have enjoyed articles such as "After the Storms" (talking about Hurricane Maria in 2017), "Remembering a Leader" (honoring MLK Jr), and "Piles of Plastic" (importance of keeping Earth clean).
Being able to have an open discussion about these current and high-interest topics helps my students gain confidence in their opinions and helps them establish healthy communication skills. Problem-solving is an important life skill that many students are lacking, and talking about real-world issues helps them begin to understand how they impact the rest of the world!
